Has it been difficult for you to transfer to a new job? Are you unsure on how to go about in coping with a job transfer? For tips on how to cope with a job transfer and information on what types of help is available for someone who is having a difficult time coping with a job transfer, I have interviewed therapist Marne Wine. Tell me a little bit about yourself. "I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice for 16 years. I was a former Employee Assistance Professional for Lockheed-Martin Astronautics, working with several transferred employees and their families. I am currently part of the Brief Therapy Institute of Denver, a group psychotherapy practice. I also have an office with Claudia Panzer, MD, and owner of Comprehensive Endocrinology at Rose Medical Center. I teach Couples and Sex Therapy to graduate and post-graduate students at Denver Family Institute." What are common reasons a job transfer may occur? "Job transfers can occur for several different reasons: due to layoffs, relocation because job prospects are better elsewhere, to be closer to family, for promotions, because of corporate mergers, health reasons, growing market in different location, or just for fun!" What type of impact can a job transfer have on someone's overall life? "It doesn't matter what the reasons are for relocating, or whether or not the move was voluntary or not, transitions are always challenging. In order to move from where you've been (the "before"), to where you're going (the future), you have to go through the now; which is a grieving period. Grief can, and usually does, involve shock, denial, bargaining, fear, shame, guilt, resentment, anger, sadness and ultimately acceptance. As we maneuver through these feelings, we can feel overwhelmed, almost as if we're going a bit crazy. We have to let go of some old in order to embrace new things in our lives. Although we might look forward to making new friends, living in a new environment, and the increased income a promotion might provide, we will not be seeing our old friends as regularly, we'll be making adjustments to a new home, and we might be spending the increased income getting ourselves situated. Our lives might not feel "better" initially, and can actually feel worse." What can someone do to cope with a job transfer? "Most importantly, allow yourself to have all of the feelings mentioned above. Trying to suppress them usually doesn't help. If you are feeling resentment toward a spouse who had the higher desire to make the transfer, talk to them about it. Start by telling them you need to talk through your feelings and you aren't doing it to hurt them, or to make them feel guilty; that you just need to get some of the feelings out. Then tell them how you wanted to support them, and your family, in making this move, but you didn't realize how hard it would be. You can say, "I've actually been excited about making this change in our lives'"I just didn't realize it would feel this hard to move. Please give me the time to work through some of these emotions." You can also talk with family, friends, or co-workers so you don't over-burden your spouse with negativity. Secondly, focus on where you have control. Anytime you begin to feel overwhelmed, take a breath, sit back, and try to prioritize first things first. You'll be amazed at how unimportant much of what you would normally think is important has become. You'll learn a hot meal, a clean bed, and unpacked boxes can help you feel a lot better. Third, begin making plans to enjoy your new environment. This might mean going out with new co-workers for lunch, meeting your neighbors, or attending a cultural event in your new city. The more you can integrate yourself into your new community, the happier you will be." What type of professional help is available for someone who is having a hard time coping with a job transfer? "There is a lot of help for those who struggle with a new transfer. You can look into joining organizations like Rotary, Toastmasters, or volunteer for a committee through your new church. Anywhere you can get involved, and do something physically, (i.e. offer to make the coffee), will help you begin to feel connected. You can continue to call friends and family, email, text and Skype. You can talk with your new pastor. You can sign up for a class. Or you can look in the newspaper on Fridays, find activities that are going on over the weekend, and take the time to explore your new locale. Embrace new experiences. Life will always be changing. It's up to you to be willing to go through the changes with grace or gloom. If you can't seem to work through the feelings of grief, consider finding a counselor through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Also, local universities often have counseling clinics that offer free or sliding scale therapy to the public, using their graduate and post-graduate students."
