Tampa, Florida, is a large city near the west coast of Central Florida. A city with a population of 332,888 in 2006, Tampa, Florida and the surrounding Tampa Bay area offers students a number of fun, entertaining, and truly college-student-friendly venues for you and your friends. The University of South Florida (USF) is located in an area referred to generally as "North Tampa." A Word About the University of South Florida The University of South Florida is a major state university that was first chartered in 1956 and has since become one of the top-growing research universities in the nation. USF is the ninth-largest university in the nation and boasts a total enrollment of more than 44,000 students. The Bull is USF's mascot and, among other sports, the college's Big East Athletic Conference involvement includes the highly successful Bulls football and basketball teams. A Bit About North Tampa North Tampa is where you will find shopping, apartments, hotels, restaurants, activities and, yes, the wildly popular Busch Gardens Africa and Adventure Island. North Tampa is basically a working-class area of town; USF's aura does permeate much of the regional atmosphere. However, there are some pockets that are notorious for crime. Perhaps the seediest area is a region just to the west of USF known as "Suitcase City." Suitcase City is generally bounded by Bruce B. Downs Boulevard to the east, Interstate 275 to the west, Fowler Avenue to the south, and Bearss Avenue to the north. While there are many local efforts to revitalize this region (and some have been fairly successful), it is still wise to know that you may want to watch your back at night, especially when near or inside some of the neighborhoods adjacent to USF. The area not far to the southeast of the USF campus is actually another city called Temple Terrace, and it has its own share of restaurants and activities. Busch Gardens and Adventure Island Busch Gardens Africa is a sprawling theme park that is well known for its animals, restaurants, and shows. However, perhaps the biggest draw for the college crowd is the park's large selection of rides. Among the top draws to the park is The SheiKra dive roller coaster, which includes a 20-story, 90-degree drop. Also to wow those with a need for speed and high thrills are Montu--an inverted roller coaster--and Gwazi, a dueling wooden roller coaster. General admission is 61.95 for adults and, when the younger brother or lil' sis stop by to see their college-student sibling (or if any youngsters should want to visit Busch Gardens while in town, for that matter) children's admission is $51.95. Adventure Island is a water park located across the street from Busch Gardens. Open from spring through early fall, the popular Adventure Island offers aquatic fun with slides, a wave pool, and inner-tube rides. Admission is $35.95 for adults and $33.95 for children (just in case that young sibling or cousin of yours is in town to check up on you---remember, keep your nose in the books and set a good example). Hours vary during the time of year during which the park operates, so be sure to call ahead. Both Busch Gardens and Adventure Island can be reached by calling 1-888-800-5447. Shopping College students looking for clothes, a new stereo, or just wanting to window shop have many venues near USF to do just that. Most USF students will find that the bulk of the shopping can be done along the nearby Fowler Avenue corridor. Perhaps the most popular place to shop on Fowler Avenue is University Mall. Located on Fowler Avenue about a half-mile west of USF, University Mall is a large, indoor mall offering a million square feet of shopping opportunities. Anchors include Sears, Macys, Burlington Coat Factory, Dillard's, Old Navy, Steve & Barry's University Sportswear, a food court, and a 16-screen Regal cinema. While Fowler Avenue offers many chain opportunities, Fletcher Avenue--about a mile to the north--will be a good place to find some local, independent stores. Eating After all that shopping, it may be time for lunch--or perhaps dinner. Well, USF students have plenty of restaurants nearby offering either (and many fine stops if hungry for breakfast or a snack). As with much of the local shopping, most of the restaurants are of the chain variety. Fowler Avenue will be the prime place to find a good bulk of the nearby dining opportunities. A popular, near-campus retreat is Jason's Deli, at the University Collections shopping center at the northwest corner of Fowler Avenue and Bruce B. Downs/30th Street. For dinner, there are places such as Chili's, Friday's, Bennigan's, and the Outback Steakhouse (all which have bars) located within a mile of USF; Outback Steakhouse, by the way, is located on 56th Street, just south of Fowler--not on Fowler, like most the other restaurants mentioned. For breakfast, Denny's can be found just to the west of University Mall on Fowler Avenue. Perkin's has a location at the corner of Fowler and 50th Street, right across the street from USF and the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI). For those on the go, the entire gamut of fastfood restaurants can be quickly found along Fowler, between 56th Street to the east and I-275 to the west. Sleeping If you are not going to stay in a USF dorm, there are a dozens of apartment complexes near the USF campus to consider. Rates and vacancies change faster than this article can be written, but know that there are dozens of medium and large-scale apartment complexes within a mile or two of USF. They can be found all along Fowler, Fletcher, and Bearss avenues, and along Bruce B. Downs Boulevard/30th Street. If you are perusing an online service to locate an apartment, do not forget to check out Temple Terrace--not just Tampa. Temple Terrace's western city limits are only a quarter mile to the east of USF, and the small city also has a number of apartment complexes with floor plans and rates that many USF students will find quite attractive. Do keep in mind, though, that some of the interior neighborhoods near USF, primarily those just to the west of the campus (such as right around University Mall), have a reputation for crime. Getting Here, There, and Everywhere Else The region near USF, like the rest of the Tampa Bay area, is designed for commuting via car--not foot. Even the USF campus itself is sprawled out over 1700 acres. The bottom line is this: if you are coming to study at USF, invest in a car. It does not have to be anything fancy, but you will be quite thankful you have four wheels on which to ride once you get to USF because, quite frankly, there are few other ways to get around town. While USF does offer a shuttle service, it will not necessarily take you everywhere you want to go. There is local bus transportation but, after four years of study, you will find it far more cost-effective and convenient to simply have your own vehicle than to use mass transit for all of your commuting. Besides, for the most part, mass transit in Tampa does not operate 24 hours a day. A Final Word About USF's Environs USF is a great place to study and the North Tampa area is a fine place to enjoy off-campus life. The local weather has few extremes; temperatures reach the 90s in the summer (it can get quite humid, but the regular afternoon summer storms take the edge off the heat), and lows get down to the 30s and 40s in the winter (measurable snowfall in Tampa is rare). Don't forget that the Tampa Bay area is expansive and includes the beaches and attractions of the west coast (only about a 30-45 minute drive from USF). If you have a few dollars to spend and a long weekend to spare, the entertainment and tourist hub of Orlando is only 90 minutes to the east on Interstate-4. Indeed, Tampa is a fantastic place to spend one's college years--and beyond. If you are like many of your fellow Bulls, you may become so enamored with the Tampa area that you might just decide to stay after graduation. Many USF graduates have gone on to enjoy very successful careers in the Tampa area and have built very nice lives in the region. The local economy is generally growing and there are many national firms and corporations that conduct a large part of their business in the Tampa Bay area. Tampa sends a hearty welcome to all who decide to attend USF. Go Bulls!
